How much does SEO cost for a small business in the UK?
By Harry Norris, Aucta AI · Updated 26 October 2026
Published UK price guides for 2026 put local SEO for a single-location business at roughly £300 to £2,000 a month, and most agency retainers at £1,000 to £3,000. The better question is what is included, and how many extra jobs a month it needs to bring in to pay for itself. Use the calculator below to work that out.

Ask three agencies what SEO costs and you will get three very different answers, often without a clear list of what you get. This guide gives you the typical UK ranges, what the money should actually buy for a local business, a calculator to check it pays for itself, and the red flags to avoid. We sell local SEO for small businesses too, so our prices are in here, but so is everything you need to compare fairly.
Typical UK SEO prices in 2026
These ranges come from published UK price guides. Nearly all are written by agencies, so treat them as a guide; prices vary a lot with how competitive your area and trade are.
| What | Typical cost | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO, one location | £300 to £2,000 a month | Most small local businesses sit here. |
| Agency retainer, small or mid-sized business | £1,000 to £3,000 a month | More competitive markets and wider areas. |
| Freelancer | £500 to £1,500 a month | Quality varies a lot; check what is actually done. |
| One-off audit | £500 to £3,000 | A list of fixes, without doing them. |
What the money should buy for a local business
Whatever you pay, local SEO should cover these. If a quote does not mention most of them, ask why.
- Your Google Business Profile looked after: category, details, photos, replies to reviews.
- A routine for getting genuine reviews.
- A clear page for each main service and area, written for real customer questions.
- Technical foundations: titles, structure, speed, and a site Google and AI tools can read.
- Consistent listings on the directories and maps that matter.
- A plain report showing calls, enquiries and where you appear, not just a list of tasks.
Will SEO pay for itself?
The real question is not the price, it is how many extra jobs it takes to cover it. These are example figures; use your own.
About 2 extra jobs a month cover it. Ask yourself whether being found more often would bring in that many.
Counts profit, not turnover. It does not include repeat work or referrals from new customers, which can add up over time.
Red flags
- Guaranteed rankings or "page one in 30 days". Nobody controls Google's results.
- No clear list of what is done each month. You should know what you are paying for.
- Long contracts before anything is proven. Rolling or short terms keep everyone honest.
- Reports full of jargon and no calls or enquiries. Rankings for words nobody searches mean nothing.
- Bought links or fake reviews. Both can get you penalised, and fake reviews are illegal in the UK.
Questions to ask before you sign
- What exactly will you do each month?
- How will we measure whether it is working, and what will you record before you start? (See how long SEO takes for what to expect.)
- Is there a minimum term, and what happens if I want to stop?
- Will you work on my existing website, or do I need a new one?
- Does it cover AI search, like ChatGPT and Google's AI answers, as well as normal results?
Local Growth is £297 a month and Full Growth is £597, both rolling monthly. That is below most of the ranges above, and we would rather explain why than leave you wondering: we focus on local businesses, where the work that moves the needle is well understood, and AI tools take on much of the routine work so our time goes on what matters.
You get every item in the "what the money should buy" list. If your market is very competitive, or you need national reach, we will tell you that up front rather than sell you a plan that cannot deliver it.

Common questions
How much should a small business spend on SEO in the UK?
Published UK price guides for 2026 put local SEO for a single location at roughly £300 to £2,000 a month, with most agency retainers for small and mid-sized businesses between £1,000 and £3,000. What matters more than the number is what is included and whether it is likely to bring in enough extra work to pay for itself.
Is cheap SEO worth it?
It can be, if the work is real and focused on the right things for a local business: your Google Business Profile, clear service pages, consistent listings and reviews. Be wary of very cheap packages that only send automated reports or buy links, which can do harm.
Is SEO a one-off cost or monthly?
Some work, like a technical audit or fixing a website's foundations, can be one-off. Most local SEO is monthly, because your profile, reviews, pages and competitors keep changing.
Can I do SEO myself to save money?
Yes, much of local SEO can be done yourself if you have the time: completing your Google Business Profile, asking for reviews and writing clear service pages. The trade-off is your time and knowing what to prioritise. Our guide to doing SEO yourself includes a free 30-day plan.
