SEO vs Google Ads: which is better for a small business?
By Harry Norris, Aucta AI · Updated 26 October 2026
Google Ads bring calls from day one but stop the moment you stop paying, and every click costs money. SEO takes months to build but keeps bringing enquiries without paying per click. Use ads for quick wins, seasonal pushes and testing; use SEO for steady enquiries. Many local businesses run ads while SEO builds.

Sooner or later every small business owner asks the same thing: should I pay for Google Ads, or invest in SEO? Both put you in front of people searching for what you do, but they work very differently. This guide compares them honestly, gives you a calculator to see what an enquiry from ads really costs you, and explains when to use each. We do local SEO and AI search, so if ads are the better fit for you right now, we will say so.
How each one works
Google Ads lets you pay to appear at the top of the results for the searches you choose, marked as sponsored. You set a budget and pay each time someone clicks. Switch it on and you appear today; switch it off and you disappear.
SEO is the work that earns you a place in the normal results, in Google Maps and increasingly in AI answers from tools like ChatGPT. You do not pay per click, but it takes months to build and needs keeping up.
Side by side
| Google Ads | SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| When you see results | From the first day | Usually months, building over time |
| How you pay | For every click, as long as you run them | For the work, not per click |
| When you stop paying | Enquiries stop straight away | Results fade slowly, not overnight |
| Where you appear | Above results, marked as sponsored | In Maps and normal results, and AI answers |
| How it looks | Clearly labelled as sponsored | An earned place, shown with your reviews |
| Control | Turn up, down or off any day | Slower to steer, harder to switch off |
| Best for | Quick wins, seasonal pushes, testing | Steady enquiries and a long-term asset |
What does an enquiry cost you?
Example figures only. Use your own cost per click from Google Ads or Keyword Planner, and how many clicks turn into a call or form.
Ads enquiries stop the day you stop paying. Enquiries from SEO take months to build, but keep coming while the work is maintained.
The calculator turns the question round. Instead of "which is cheaper?", it asks how many enquiries SEO needs to bring in each month to match what ads cost you per enquiry. Once SEO is bringing in more than that, every extra enquiry costs you nothing more, whereas with ads each one keeps costing the same.
When Google Ads are the better choice
- You need enquiries this week, not in three months.
- You are a new business with no reviews or website history yet.
- You have a seasonal peak, such as boiler repairs in winter or air conditioning in summer.
- You want to test which services or areas bring the best enquiries.
When SEO is the better choice
- You want steady enquiries without paying for every click.
- Clicks in your trade are expensive, so ads eat the profit from each job.
- You want to show up in Google Maps and AI answers, not only above the results.
- You plan to be in business for years and want something that builds.
Using both
For many local businesses the answer is both, in stages: run modest ads to keep the phone ringing while SEO builds, use what the ads teach you about which searches bring enquiries, then reduce the ad spend as more enquiries come in from Maps and the normal results. Our guide on how long SEO takes shows roughly when that point arrives, and what SEO costs covers the budget side.
Our plans focus on SEO and AI search: your Google profile, pages, listings and reviews, so enquiries keep coming without paying per click. If you need calls this month, we will tell you to run some ads alongside it rather than pretend SEO is instant.
Enquiries that do not stop when the budget does.
Local SEO and AI search from £297 a month, rolling, usually on the website you already have. Google Business Profile, pages, listings and a plain monthly report.
Common questions
Is SEO or Google Ads better for a small business?
It depends on how quickly you need enquiries and how long you plan to invest. Google Ads can bring calls from the first day but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build but keeps bringing enquiries in without paying per click. Many local businesses use ads for quick results while SEO builds.
How much do Google Ads cost for a small business?
You set the budget, and you pay each time someone clicks. The cost per click depends on your trade, area and competition, and can range from under a pound to many pounds for competitive services. Google's Keyword Planner shows estimates for your own searches.
Do Google Ads help SEO?
Not directly. Paying for ads does not improve your normal rankings. Ads can, however, show you which searches bring enquiries, which is useful when deciding which pages to build for SEO.
Can I stop SEO once I rank?
You can, but rankings tend to slip over time as competitors keep working and your details go out of date. Many businesses drop to a lighter level of ongoing work rather than stopping completely.
What are Local Services Ads?
In some trades and areas, Google offers Local Services Ads, which charge per enquiry rather than per click and show a Google verification badge. Availability depends on your trade and location, so check Google's own pages for your business.
