Small business websites: how to choose the right one
By Harry Norris, Aucta AI · Updated 26 October 2026
Choosing a small business website comes down to five decisions: how it is built, whether you will own it, what it will really cost, how you will pay, and whether Google and AI tools can read it. Get those right and the design is the easy part. Each guide below answers one of them in plain English.

Most advice about websites is written for developers or by companies trying to sell you one. These guides are written for business owners who want to make a good decision without learning the jargon. We build websites ourselves, so where one of our small business website plans is relevant we say so, but every guide also tells you when another option is the better fit.
The five decisions that matter
Work through these in order. Each one links to a guide that answers it in full.
- 1
How should it be built?
A website builder, WordPress, or a custom site. This decides how fast it is, how much looking after it needs and what it can grow into.

Will you own it?
Paying for a website does not always make it yours. Check who holds the domain, the design, the files and your Google profile before you sign.
Do you actually own your website? - 3
What will it really cost?
The build price is only part of it. Hosting, your domain and changes carry on every year, and most quotes leave them out.

How will you pay?
A one-off build or a monthly plan. Over a few years the gap is smaller than most people expect; what you own at the end matters more.

Will Google and AI tools find it?
More people now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI answers who to use. A site needs to explain clearly what you do and where, in a way those tools can read.

Common questions
What is the best way to get a website for a small business?
It depends on your time, budget and how much you want to look after yourself. The main routes are a DIY website builder, a one-off build from a freelancer or agency, or a monthly plan. Whichever you choose, make sure the domain and the site are yours, and that it is built to be found on Google and AI search.
Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile or social media?
They help, but you do not control them, and they say little about each service you offer or each area you cover. A website is the one place you own. It gives Google and AI tools much more to understand about your business, and gives customers a reason to pick you.
Should I build my own website?
If you have the time and need something simple, a website builder can be enough. If your time is better spent on the business, or you want to be found for several services and areas, a professionally built site is usually worth considering. Our guides compare the options honestly, including the ones we do not sell.
How long does it take to get a small business website?
It varies with the size of the site and how quickly your photos and details are ready. Ours usually go live within 2 weeks of the first call.
