How long does SEO take to work for a small business?

By Harry Norris, Aucta AI · Updated 26 October 2026

    Quick answer

Quick fixes can show within weeks, but steady growth in calls and enquiries usually builds over three to six months for a local business. Google's own guidance puts it at four months to a year. Expect impressions to rise before clicks, and the most competitive searches to take longest.

"How long until it works?" is the first question most business owners ask about SEO, and the answer they are often given is "it depends". This guide gives you a straighter answer: what to expect and when, with a real timeline from a local business we work with. It is how we set expectations for our local SEO and AI search plans.

    The honest answer

Google's own advice to businesses hiring help says that in most cases it takes four months to a year to make improvements and then start seeing the benefit. For a local business in a reasonably competitive area, three to six months is a fair expectation for noticeable growth, with some quick wins earlier. Anyone promising page one in a few weeks is guessing.

    What happens when

    1. Weeks 1 to 401

      Foundations

Google Business Profile fixed, page titles and structure sorted, tracking set up, starting point recorded. Google starts revisiting your pages.

    2. Months 2 to 302

      Early movement

Impressions rise first as Google shows you for more searches. Positions start to climb; clicks follow more slowly.

    3. Months 3 to 603

      Growth compounds

New pages, reviews and listings build on each other. Calls and enquiries become noticeable for less competitive searches.

    4. Months 6 to 1204

      Competitive searches

The most valuable, competitive searches take longest. Steady work keeps you climbing and holds what you have gained.

    A real timeline

    From our work

For an independent garage we work with, the first seven weeks or so looked flat in Search Console while we fixed the foundations: page titles, structure and the details search engines read behind the scenes. Then clicks rose sharply once we started publishing a proper page for every service, with guides grouped around them.

Across the three months since we started, clicks from Google went from 753 to 2,410 compared with the three months before, the number of times the site appeared in search grew around six and a half times, and its average position moved from 17.1 to 8.7. The flat start is normal. It is the groundwork that the later growth stands on.

Notice that impressions grew faster than clicks. That is typical: Google starts showing you for more searches before you are high enough for many people to click. When you check your own progress, look at impressions and positions first, then calls and enquiries.

    What speeds it up

    • An existing website and Google profile with some history, rather than starting from nothing.
    • Fixing obvious problems first, such as a site AI tools and search engines cannot read properly.
    • A clear page for each service and area, published steadily rather than all at once and then nothing.
    • A routine for genuine reviews, kept up every month.
    • A less competitive trade or area.

    What slows it down

    • A brand-new website or domain with no history.
    • A crowded market, such as a city with many established competitors.
    • A website that is slow, hard to edit or cannot be read by search engines.
    • Stopping and starting, or changing direction every few weeks.
    • A suspended or neglected Google Business Profile; see what to do if yours is suspended.

    Common questions

How long does SEO take to work?

For a local business, quick fixes can show within weeks, and steady growth in calls and enquiries usually builds over three to six months. Google's own guidance says it typically takes four months to a year to make improvements and start seeing the benefit, depending on competition and how much needs fixing.

Why are my impressions going up but not my clicks?

That is normal early on. As Google starts showing your site for more searches, impressions rise first, often in lower positions that few people click. Clicks follow as those positions improve. It is usually a good sign, not a bad one.

    Can SEO work faster?

Some parts can. Fixing a Google Business Profile, correcting a site that search engines could not read properly, or improving page titles can show within weeks. Building enough authority to hold top positions in a competitive area cannot be rushed.

Should I stop SEO if nothing happens in the first month?

Usually not. The first month is mostly foundations, and Google takes time to revisit and re-assess pages. Judge progress at three months against the starting point you recorded, looking at impressions, positions and enquiries rather than one ranking.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT and other AI answers?

It varies and is harder to predict, because AI tools draw on many sources and change often. In our experience the same work that builds Google visibility, plus reviews and mentions elsewhere, is what gets a business named. Track it monthly by asking the same questions.
